Sierra Nevada - 'Snowy Range'
The Sierra Nevada is a mountain range located in the province of Granada and Almeria.
Although the Parque Nacional Sierra Nevada is the largest national park in Spain, covering nearly 86,000 hectares, the main place people think of is the Sierra Nevada ski station located on the northern slopes of Veleta, approximately 120km from Malaga.
The Sierra Nevada regularly hosts races for the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup and back in 1996 it was the host for the Alpine World Ski Championships.
The ski village of Pradollano is popular with locals, but becoming increasingly popular with tourists. To help with the growth of the resort, toboggans, ski-bikes, an ice rink and many other activities are now available during the winter months. The winter season is usually open from late November through until late April or sometimes early May.
During the summer months, the Sierra Nevada finds itself visited by walkers/hikers, horse riders, mountain bikers and climbers.
During the months of July and August it is easy to head up to the summit of Veleta for stunning views, with the use of the chair lift and cable car.
The Sierra Nevada is host to some fantastic fauna and flora, and is ever popular for bird-watchers as the Golden Eagle, Bonnellis Eagle, European Goldfinch, Common Kestrel and other magnificent birds can be found souring through the skies.
